Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Sacramento CA
1231 PM PST Sun Dec 29 2024
.SYNOPSIS...
Active weather continues through this evening with mountain snow,
isolated Valley/foothill thunderstorms, breezy winds, and rain
showers. Dry weather returns tomorrow and continues through the
week with cold morning lows and patchy Valley frost and fog.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
Widespread Valley rain has mostly ended this afternoon, with
showers primarily in the northern Sacramento Valley and
foothills/mountains of the Sierra. A line of showers is
approaching the Redding/Red Bluff area at the time of this
writing, so additional brief moderate to heavy rain is still
possible. Mountain snow has led to chain controls along I-80 and
US-50, and will likely continue as colder air moves into the
higher elevations with the passing of the primary cold front. Snow
levels are dropping to around 6500-7500 feet or so, as evident by
CalTrans cameras and the Colfax S-band Snow Level Radar. Looking
at the SPC Hourly Mesoscale Analysis, a pool of 250 J/kg surface-
based CAPE is developing in the northern Sacramento Valley, so
isolated post-frontal thunderstorms are still on the table this
afternoon through the evening. Gusty southerly winds are starting
to weaken as well, but occasional gusts up to 30 mph are still
possible this afternoon in the current Wind Advisory locations. We
will begin to clear out later in the evening with continued
clearing as we enter the new work week.
Ensemble guidance shows this system vacating the area eastward
with upper level ridging filling in over the region by tomorrow
night. With the synoptic pattern shift, we will see cooler high
temperatures and cold morning low temperatures, along with morning
fog and patchy frost. Periods of breezy northerly winds are
expected to also develop tomorrow in and along the I-5 corridor as
our synoptic pattern changes. Forecast high temperatures for the
Valley Monday through Wednesday will be around 5-7 degrees cooler
than our recent run of low to mid 60s. Overnight low temperatures
will fall tonight into low 30s to low 40s across the Valley, with
the colder temperatures in the northern Sacramento Valley. Tuesday
morning, the Valley will see widespread low to mid 30s.
Widespread below freezing temperatures are not anticipated,
however NBM probabilities of reaching 32 degrees or colder are
around 10-40% in the Valley Tuesday morning so a few areas in the
Valley may reach 32 degrees or colder. Probabilities drop
considerably for 32 degrees or colder on Wednesday and Thursday
AM, however mid 30s to low 40s morning lows are still expected.
The EC Ensemble is also hinting a weak shortwave moving through
Oregon and Washington Wednesday, and the NBM is responding by
adding a slight (10-20%) chance of showers from Redding northward
through Thursday. The weak trough may track further north than
current projections, so the current precipitation forecast will
likely fluctuate as we move into the week. As it stands now,
current totals are below 0.25" inches so a wetting rain is likely
the only impacts at this time.

.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Thursday THROUGH Sunday)...
Thursday upper level ridging will once again be the dominate
synoptic pattern over interior NorCal, with high temperatures
warming into the upper 50s with a chance to crack 60 in the Valley
possible. Clusters still hint at the possibility of a trough
entering the area towards the end of the work week through
Saturday. Current NBM rainfall totals show the bulk of
precipitation would once again be confined mostly to Shasta
County, southern Cascades, and the foothills/Sierra. Little snow
impacts are expected at this time, however as we move through the
week check back for forecast updates as guidance becomes more
clear on potential precipitable impacts.
&&
